I really do not see the point of re-recording brilliant songs, but trying to sound exactly like the original. Why? Won't most people then prefer to listen to the original? If you have a new interpretation of the song, ie it sounds really different from the original, then go ahead. I may not like it, but you can do it. (eg Every Breath You Take redone by the Fugees). Maybe it has something to do with money (doesn't it always with TPTB?) Maybe it's cheaper to pay a no-name artist to do a cover, than to pay royalties on the original. Sounds the more likely option, as they haven't changed the songs at all, and the singer actually tries to get his voice to sound like Freddie (fails miserably, but that's btw). For those interested in hearing a really good re-interpretation of a classic - try to get yourself a copy of "All Along the Watchtower" as done by the Dave Matthews Band. I actually prefer this version, but then I never grew up with the original, so I may be biased. I have no idea if it's available online, but it was a b-side on the single "Ants Marching", and they used to do it live all the time. Request it at your local radio station.
