I think it's a bit of both. Duncan thinks he should have been there,
but he also feels Richie should have protected Tessa. But it's not
Richie's fault - Richie didn't know he was going to become an
Immortal. So maybe Duncan feels that's his fault too - if he'd just
*told* Richie, then Richie would have not worried that a guy had a
gun. (Of course, knowing Richie, he would have up and got himself
'killed' for the first time much sooner doing some teenage fool thing
      or another.)

We tend to forget that Duncan became Immortal when he was - what, 29?
Richie was *19*. Then we blame him for acting like he was 19. It took
Duncan another 20 years or so to even learn how to read (and he had to
walk a mile in the snow, too. Uphill- both ways!) He didn't immediately
rush off and learn how to read. But we blame Richie for not rushing off
immediately and going to college. At 19, a person thinks they're never
going to die. There's all the time in the world. So why not act like
it? And most 19 year-olds do! Yet when Richie acted like a 19 year-old,
everybody was quick to talk about him being rebellious and not
listening to Duncan. I think that's the pot calling the kettle black.

Yes, I agree. (Enjoy it now.)

      >But it's not
      > Richie's fault

Well, it's not DM's fault, either. This whole thing flows from emotions,
not logic. Tessa is abruptly, brutally, & senselessly dead--it's gonna get
emotional, & "fault" is totally irrelevant. RR _was_ there. DM _should_
have been there. Now, they are both struggling w/ those 2 facts.

      - Richie didn't know he was going to become an
      > Immortal. So maybe Duncan feels that's his fault too - if he'd just

      > or another.)

I agree w/ that last bit. (Enjoy again.) BUT--even if RR had known he would
become an Immie & hadn't triggered it w/ some silly stunt or another, why
would that have changed things on the street that night? Even if RR had
thrown himself in front of Tessa, the druggie would probably have killed her
eventually; he seemed intent on not leaving witnesses.

And, overall, I think DM was completely correct in NOT telling RR he would
become an Immortal. Let him enjoy a relatively normal life. If he had made
it into his 40's, then maybe tell him & let him choose whether to have his
      1st death in his prime.

      > But we blame Richie for not rushing off

We do? I've never heard that slant. I blame RR for a lot of things, but
      not that.

What he SHOULD have buckled down to immediately was learning from DM &
others how to survive as an Immie (including knowing when to duck....). All
the rest (college, world travel, motorcyles, the fun stuff) could have
waited, or else there never would be time for anything at all. Even a 19
year old who'd seen the Immie's life as DM had experienced it recently
      should have understood that.

The age of whisky (when you're talking about Scotch, then
no "e") is counted by the years it spends in the cask - once
it goes into a bottle it does not *age* any more.

100 years in a cask and you'd have a very concentrated
product - too strong to even taste comfortably - probably of a very
dark colour, as the alcohol takes on the colour of the wood
      it is stored in.
