TPTB had a change of heart about the violence versus "natural causes" somewhere along the way (between the !st and 2nd Watcher Chronicle CD in fact). On the original CD, the Indian, Ironhorse, is listed as having died from eating some poisonous mushrooms. On the second CD, he is is killed in a battle. OTOH they left more than a few entries that seem like natural causes (Mother Nature versus human intervention) to me..several of the Immortals listed had drown, frozen to death, been struck by lightening, fallen from some height , were snake bit, choked on food, poisoned by bad food, trampled by horses, poisoned by bad guys, etc. About the only things not listed are illness and old age. So....the 98 year old Pre-Immortal who falls, breaks a hip, and lays on the floor for 3 days before dying might well become Immortal. Of course a 98 year old Immortal wouldn't last too long in the Game.

It's entirely likely that Amanda had it all wrong in Raven when she shot Nick to make him Immortal.(Amanda make a mistake?)(Duh!) Lots of other Immortals became immortal after being poisoned. As for Duncan stabbing Kate/Faith..he was, no doubt, precipitous. There might have been lots of opportunities for her to become Immortal that didn't require a knife in the heart in her wedding bed. She might have fallen off a horse...or eaten spoiled food..or drown in the well. He acted rashly and paid the price. There never was a good explanation why he did it on their wedding night instead of waiting a wee bit. Then again, it was an extremely poorly thought-out movie.

For what it's worth (& I don't think it's worth much), Donna Lettow had this
to say on the topic (back in 5/99, when she posted on one of the HL
      forums)--
"The general rule of thumb that I use is that a violent death is a death
caused by an external force. Death by disease or old age is a death caused
by an internal force/forces. (Yeah, yeah, contagious diseases come from the
outside, but it's still the body's reaction to those contagions that causes
death.) The grey area with this rule I suppose are things like starvation
and suffocation, but for the CD Bill Panzer approved both as possible First
Deaths, and his word is law in such matters."

It may be law, but often it doesn't make sense. Hence, Endgame.

Not a bad episode..not a great one. The outline of Duncan/Richie's entire future is set out. Duncan will attempt to tell Richie what to do, Richie will rebel against doing it. They were ill-suited to be teacher-pupil- their temperaments just grated. We learn Charlie's back story and he begins to see things that will confuse him for years and finally get him killed.

A few things that occurred to me:

      1) Why do Richie and Duncan go off searching for the Immortal they feel after Richie gets his chili dog? Why not just go about your business ? The street was crowded, they were in the open, no one was going to jump out at them with a sword..why go looking for trouble?

      2) The security around the British Ambassador and the Consulate look very lax- even by 1993 standards.

      3) Why did Annie send Mick and Tommy out of the car to kill the Ambassador? Why not go herself - she had the best chance of surviving.

      4) In the dojo, Richie tells Duncan that the reason he (Duncan) is being so hard on Richie is because he (Duncan) feels guilty for not being with Tessa when she was attacked. I don't buy that. *I* think Duncan is being hard on Richie because, subconsciously, Duncan blames *Richie* for not protecting Tessa.

      5) Immortals bounce!

      6) While I understand and accept the notion of katana space....it stretches things a bit to have Annie pull her sword out of the back of that tight, belted, outfit she was wearing at the warehouse.

      7) Why didn't Richie heal faster from the injures Annie inflicted during the warehouse fight? He was still limping and cradling a broken hand when he arrived at the dojo.

      8) Does 100 year old Irish whisky really come in bottles with screw tops?

      9) Did Richie resent the fact that Duncan went to hold and comfort Annie after her fight with Richie- instead of going to comfort his badly shaken student?

      and

      10) After training Richie to fight with a two-handed sword, why did Duncan give him a one-handed rapier? A subconscious attempt to handicap a potential rival? A lapse of memory? The need to differentiate the two characters for viewers who couldn't otherwise tell Duncan and Richie apart?

Wendy(Do we need to have the eternal debate on whether Duncan's night with Annie was a natural reaction to grief or total disrespect for Tessa's memory?)

Some of you may remember when I did these the first time around. I *thought* I had done all the Season 2 episodes but I can't find any record of about half of them. So..I'll try and fill in some of the ones I'm missing.

Since I don't have my first-run tapes any longer, I'll have to use the TNN versions to compare against the uncut version. It doesn't appear that TNN is cutting very much out for extra commercial time. (They'll probably get worse after the first time through) and my memory of what was shown the first time is pretty good. I'm going to mark bits that I am unsure of (TNN cut or Euro) with an asterisk (*) and we can sort those out later.

      So..here goes:
      ***********************************************************************
      (1) * After the shoot-out with Annie:

TNN: Richie asks if Annie sounds sincere. Duncan just looks at him and the Richie says "I was afraid of that". Cut to commercial

Euro: Richie says "I was afraid of that". Pan back to Annie glaring at Richie as she is put into the police car. Back to Richie looking worried. Cut to commercial

      (2) Back from commercial after shoot-out.

TNN: Duncan and Richie in elevator, going up to the loft.

Duncan: That was a Mac 10, Richie!

Euro: Shot of the outside of the dojo. Then inside to Duncan and Richie walking toward elevator. Richie is pumped up on adrenaline. Duncan looks pissed. As they walk,

Richie: I was staring right down the barrel of that creep's gun, Mac! Right down the barrel and I didn't even flinch.
      <They enter the elevator>
Richie: Is that what it feels like every time?
Duncan :No! <Pulls down the elevator grate> Only when you're a damn fool!
      Richie: What's eating you?
Duncan: That was a Mac 10, Richie!

      (3) Duncan and Richie training at the dojo. the Euro has more shots of Duncan dumping Richie, really humiliating him.

      (4) After the flashback to Ireland

TNN: Off Duncan looking at Annie's ring, we go to the outside shot of the office building

Euro: Off Duncan looking at Annie's ring, we see Richie coming across the dojo. He has showered and is in street clothes. He still looks pissed. Duncan moves to the office doorway.

      Duncan: Where ya goin?
Richie: My place, the zoo, anyplace there's no mat for you to dump me on.
Duncan: You come in second to Annie, you'll die - forever!
      Richie: I'll take my chances.

Off Duncan looking concerned, we go to the outside of the office building.

(5)* After Annie exits the morgue

TNN: Cut to Richie working out at the dojo
Euro: Cut to the bright busy street outside the dojo. Pan the outside of the dojo and then cut to Richie working out

      (6) The sword training session is longer in the Euro. More of the same.

      (7) After we see Annie reunited with her gang at the bar,

TNN: Cut to dojo. Richie all sweaty and panting, hitting the big boxing bag. Charlie is there. Richie stops.
      Richie: I'm done!

Euro: Cut to Richie hitting the bag. Charlie is there helping out by offering advice ( "use your left", "move your hips"etc). Richie hits harder and harder, a bit of desperation showing. Charlie is concerned about Richie's mental state

Charlie: You and MacLeod work things out?
      Richie: Close enough.

      <Richie stops, sweaty and panting.>

      Richie :I'm done

      (8) Return from commercial, the Bike shop.

TNN: We see a car pull up with Mick driving. Then we see Richie pulling on his motorcycle helmet.

Euro: Pan the outside of the bike shop, a row of motorcycles. Richie and owner exit the shop and shake hands.

Richie: Thanks for the deal, Ron. Take it easy.
      Ron: Take it easy.

Richie kneels next to his new bike, making some adjustments. Then we see a car pull up with Mick driving. Then we see Richie pulling on his motorcycle helmet

      (9) After Richie escapes from Annie at the warehouse:

TNN Cut to Duncan inside the dojo. He is near the doors, "feeling" an Immortal approach. Richie enters, all banged up.

Euro: Cut to the dojo. Charlie is fixing a weight bench. Duncan stands nearby. He looks concerned.

Charlie: You still worried about him? Come on! The woman's dead.
Duncan: <distractedly> That's right. <Duncan feels an Immortal approaching. He slowly crosses the dojo until he is at the doors. He waits. Richie appears, all banged up.

(10)* Annie and Duncan get physical.

TNN :Duncan and Annie fall backwards onto the pier. Kiss kiss. Play with hair. Annie tries to get Duncan's shirt open. Kiss kiss. Fade to commercial

Euro:Duncan and Annie fall backwards onto the pier. Kiss kiss. Play with hair. Annie tries to get Duncan's shirt open. Kiss kiss. Shift positions to again work on each others shirts. Kiss kiss. Annie settles the issue by ripping the buttons loose. Nice shot of Duncan's bare chest, shoulders, and back. Kiss kiss. Fade to commercial.

      ********************************************************
There you have them. I only found three cuts that I'm reasonably sure are TNN's alone (# 1, 5 and 10)

About the lovemaking scene, I think he was driven to
it by grief. He was hurt, vulnerable and looking for
comfort. Add to that being drunk...

But I'm anxious to here other thoughts on it, too.

      And that's a bad thing?

      >>> 1) Why do Richie and Duncan go off searching for the Immortal they feel

street was crowded, they were in the open, no one was going to jump out at

DM usually did that. As he told Methos (who of course turned tail & promptly
vanished) when they sensed Koren/Kronos at the start of Comes a Horseman, DM
      likes to know who's around.

      >>> 3) Why did Annie send Mick and Tommy out of the car to kill the
Ambassador? Why not go herself - she had the best chance of surviving.>>>

According to DM, she had a habit of getting her activist/terrorist men
killed that way. But, she was also the leader there, & leaders often hang
back while the minions wreak havoc.

      >>> 6) While I understand and accept the notion of katana space....it
stretches things a bit to have Annie pull her sword out of the back of that
tight, belted, outfit she was wearing at the warehouse.>>>

Anymore than casting Sheen Easton as an Immie stretches things?

       >>>> 9) Did Richie resent the fact that Duncan went to hold and comfort
Annie after her fight with Richie- instead of going to comfort his badly
      shaken student?>>>

I don't know, but making love on a wooden dock is just dumb--you know
_someone_ got splinters, & that's gotta hurt even an immie rump.

      >>> 10) After training Richie to fight with a two-handed sword, why did
Duncan give him a one-handed rapier? A subconscious attempt to handicap a
potential rival? A lapse of memory? The need to differentiate the two
characters for viewers who couldn't otherwise tell Duncan and Richie
      apart?>>>

At least DM learned a lesson after Felicia trashed a $200,000 sword; DM gave
RR a crappy one whose handle routinely broke off under a harsh look....

      >>> Wendy(Do we need to have the eternal debate on whether Duncan's night
with Annie was a natural reaction to grief or total disrespect for Tessa's
      memory?)>>>

Neither--the producers just couldn't wait to put DM in sexy scenes w/ the
guest tarts, something that (FBs aside) didn't work w/ dear Tessa scowling
in the background. And sexy DM scenes aren't going to get complaints from
      ME.

AP (w/ an assist from his loose & messy hair) does a nice job of showing
throughout the ep that DM is in shock over losing Tessa, still raw &
      disoriented.

      The Zone today--ick.
