       Hello everyone,
just wondering if any conventions of HL will be run in
Australia? Anyone know of any or where I can search
      for this?
      Thank you

Subject: Jim Byrnes CD Review in Vancouver Sun

There was a very good review of Jim Byrnes' new CD in the Vancouver Sun
today. I can't link to it as it's not on-line, so here it is:

Jim Byrnes: Fresh Horses *four stars*

Whether he's behind the microphone or in front of the camera,
musician-actor Jim Byrnes has been a magnetic performer who commands
attention. Fresh Horses, his new CD, will only reinforce that reputation.

Byrnes assembles a crack studio band, including violinist-mandolinist Jesse
Zubot, guitarist Steve Dawson, keyboards player Chris Gestrin and bassist
Andrew Downing, and arranges the 12 tunes -five of which he wrote or
      co-wrote- to utilize their strengths.

The Billy Cowsill ballad "The Embers" features Gestrin's tuneful piano and
Downing's melodic solo on upright bass. On "I've Got Blood In My Eyes For
You", Gestrin's organ and Zubot's violin embellish Byrnes' strong vocal.

Both Byrnes and Dawson perform great guitar work on the slow blues "Love Is
Just a Gamble". The leader gets a mariachi-band flavour on "Postcard from
      Mexico" which has amusing lyrics.

Among the cover songs, Byrnes sings a soulful version of Bob Dylan's "Just
Like Tom Thumb's Blues" while Zubot's violin and Dawson's lap steel guitar
do wondrous things on Neil Young's "For the Turnstiles".

Byrnes' band plays two CD release shows, Friday at Vancouver's St. James
Community Centre and Saturday at Port Moody's Inlet Theatre.
