Telling people about your immortality is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" proposition. I think Duncan was in a phase where he was trying hard *not* to involved any more mortals in his dangerous life. He put off telling Anne as long as he could (Longer, IMGLO, than he should have.) He didn't tell Renee. He didn't tell Maurice. And he didn't tell Charlie. Charlie didn't strike me as the kind of guy who would have just accepted the knowledge and then stayed out of the way. He would have wanted to be a part of Duncan's world and Duncan didn't really need another sidekick- especially one who *wasn't* going to be Immortal someday. The best Duncan could do was try and keep Charlie and any visiting Immortals apart. It might have made sense to tell him when he was supposedly dying after being shot by Xavier's men, but once he recovered...what would have been the point? And then Charlie went off to the Balkans. Duncan surely didn't count on Mara getting killed by an Immo!
       rtal.

Would it have made sense to tell Charlie about Cord as soon as everyone realized that Charlie was hunting Cord and why? Maybe. Then again....if Charlie knew what Cord was, he probably would have just taken a bigger knife to the fight. And Duncan was trying very hard in the episode to *not* kill Cord because of Joe. If Charlie had understood that Cord was off limits to mortals, wouldn't he have pressured Duncan to kill him instead? Kill Cord to make Charlie happy or don't kill him to make Joe happy?? As it was, Cord killed Charlie and Duncan killed Cord and no one was happy.

      >I can really see the emotion in Joe's face at the

I'm not sure they ever truly made peace. They managed to get over it but their relationship was never quite the same. The Watcher Rules do make a certain amount of sense. You can't be a real Watcher (hands off at all times) if you are also good friends with an Immortal. Joe liked to use Duncan. He liked to live vicariously through Duncan. And, of course, Duncan got use to going to Joe for information. I think the worst part of the relationship was that Joe was incapable of sticking to a decision. Duncan would have respected it either way - friends with Joe or not friends with Joe - but the constant whipsawing was hard.

I hadn't realized this until I started studying maps for the impending
