Interesting; both JMS and Joss Whedon could hardly be accused of a prejudice
against "slash," since both have used same-sex relationships in their canon
      for main characters.

We worship at the altar of JMS and Joss. <g>

It's actually interesting to see how different actors and PTB
respond to the idea of slash (not RPS, just "normal" slash, if
there is such a thing - Nina, just be quiet! <g>). In the '70s
there were some actors who were shocked and freaked out by it.

Maybe I shouldn't say "slash" (because Nina gets all excited -
and not in a good way) but rather that the audience might perceive
the characters as being attracted to others of the same gender.

Then you get actors who don't care either way (I believe when
someone asked Michael Shanks *hail the sainted one* what he
thought he just said, "Whatever stirs your coffee," while RDA
didn't like the idea at all).

And some who quite like the idea. Claudia Christian said she
didn't want a Ivanova to have a boring lovelife - "Give me an
alien or a woman." And we know what PW thinks about the
      spiral Quickening.

I think some actors deliberately play up the slashiness
sometimes, either for fun, or to add subtext, or as a nod
to the slash fans (Paul Gross admitted to doing that in the
third season of Due South, for example). And when you get
people who normally *wouldn't* see slashiness in a show
noticing something, then you have to wonder if it was done
      deliberately.

And I'm only talking about the acting/PTP side, NOT fanfic
      here. Thoughts?

Actually, Michael Shanks also said that he and RDA have often joked around
about the slash aspect. They know it's there. RDA made a comment in an
interview on Tech TV regarding porn on the web and that he wouldn't want his
daughter to see it. The interviewer was also talking to him about slash
stories about Murdoch (the bad guy on MacGyver) and MacGyver.

Peter DeLuise often jokes around on the DVD commentaries for Stargate by
calling RDA "the confident heterosexual." LOL.

Fill me in here, cause I must've been out of the loop
when he talked about that. What'd he say?

Personally I love it when the actors and/or writers
play with their characters in this way. It's an
interesting way to add subtext and dimension. Whether
done for laughs as in sit-com style, or to add an
element of underlying eroticism ala Anne Rice, I always
find it a fascinating way to play with the audience.
Whatever one's personal feelings are on the subject,
      it'll get a reaction.

You have to wonder whether they thought it was slashy from the start,
heard that people viewed the relationship that way, or if reporters
or overzealous fans told them about slash fanfic.

Obviously RDA wouldn't like his daughter to see it - but then I don't
think anyone would want their young children to read explicit sex of
any kind on the web. Which is why parents should monitor their kids'
net usage. And if they don't and the kid sees something they
shouldn't, they have only themselves to blame. Unfortunately, many
people don't see it that way and want other people to do their
      parenting for them.

I've had a crush on Peter DeLuise since 21 Jumpstreet days. :) (And
he was in HL, so this isn't off-topic.)

Speaking of the DVDs, are these the American releases? Because the
ones we get here are via the U.K., and the episodes on each DVD aren't
in the right order, nor do they have commentary (that I know of), plus
they have some funny feature that won't let them play in my DVD player,
which plays *everything* else. So I've been thinking of maybe getting
      them from the States.

He said it was homoerotic. Also, when questioned about the
nose-painting scene in "Chivalry", he said that if Duncan
had done that to a woman, everyone would have known what it
      meant.

I also enjoy it. I was just reading part of an interview
about "Angel" in which David Greenwalt said something like
they had Angel going to the ballet "as if the show wasn't
gay enough". And then David Boreanaz quickly said, "Angel
is not gay." Well, we know that. But it's still fun to hear
Spike needle him about his "nancy-boy hair gel". :)
