Ten things I love most about Highlander:
[nearly impossible to enumerate ONLY ten things I love about HL]
1. Adrian Paul. He is the reason I started to watch it and the reason I'm
still here typing on this list [and others] zillions of years later. He is
beauty, strength, passion and talent unlimited. Whatever he does in life beyond
HL I'll be there rooting for him.
2. The "talmudic" discussions on life, death, immortality, justice,
forgiveness , etc. etc. The episodes Studies in Light and Leader of the Pack are my
two favorite episodes because of their depth of theme.
3. The fact that as an "old lady" I began to experience fandom,
conventions, [Adrian Paul watching,] and so much fun on my own and met some of the most
amazing people and a handful of dear, dear friends. [this by the way is what
my husband likes most about *my* HL addiction, he said I've met such quality
people who have become friends beyond fandom]. Fandom is underrated. From
the earliest days on the Rysher forum [now Holyground forum] I was honored to
read the deep, passionate and intelligent analyses of episodes from the likes
of Carmel McPherson and the young [Big] John Bierly. As a writer myself, it
was impossible not to realize immediately that I was in the presence of
amazing, clever, talented, intelligent people, and never felt I was "wasting my
time". Even the writers of HL, [Donna Lettow and Gillian Horvath] braved
interraction with us as fans and gave us the treasured insider tidbits. I am most
grateful for all of it.
4. The music. From Queen to Dust in the Wind, to all things Celtic
especially Loreena McKennitt to the amazing Jim Byrnes, I love it all.
5. The love scenes that were actually varied from romps to tearful tender
moments, all geared to the characters and the story lines [as were the fights]
6. Watching [at cons] the very real and evident friendships among the cast
members. Their enjoyment of one another is visible. They laugh and admit when
they drove one another crazy but they stay in contact and evince a genuine
love. It takes Quality people to be able to sustain that all these years. It is
unusual in television series. I can remember reading that when XFiles was on
the air all those years that even *during* the production the two leads
never were friends. Never met or talked off the set, didn't visit, know one
another's families, etc. *That* is more typical.
7. The young Richie. Especially that sluicing mouth thing he did to imitate
the sword fight he had witnessed. Such a treat, green jacket and all. Loved
the brash young Richie.
8. The long and faithful relationship portrayed between Duncan and Tessa
[the radiant Alexandra Vandernoot]. Beautifully done. I am only sorry it ended.
Duncan was never the same again.
9. The fact that my interest in all things HL intersected with my husband's
love of Scottish history and took us on a two week trip to Scotland which
included a boat ride on the shores of Loch Shiel and trip we both still count
among our most delightful ever [and that coming from people who travel for a
living and have been everywhere from Africa to China to Latin America to almost
the whole of Europe.] We count walking the fields of Culloden among the most
poignant and treasured of our memories. Without Highlander I would have
missed its import.
10. The fact that it deepened my love of computers. Without a computer I'd
never have found the joy of fandom and without the fandom I wouldn't have
learned 90% of what I now know about computers. :)

That's true -- there is a lot of music connected to Highlander in my mind,
as well, that is quite wonderful. And some of it that I wouldn't have
discovered, such as Jim Byrnes, without Highlander.

Oh yeah. Love Jim Byrnes. I played "Fresh Horses" for The Piper a while
back, and he loved it, too.
Speaking of The Piper, have you heard the Rogues' latest version of "Bonny
Portmore"? They finally recorded it with The Piper playing it on the
flute. It's frabjous.
Not that I'm partial to The Piper playing the flute, or anything. *g*

There's a great Celtic band I heard over the summer called Emerald Rose.
They played a concert at a Lord of the Rings convention here in Orlando and they
were a lot of fun. I bought a couple of their CDs. They're coming back to
town this weekend for Megacon. Are you familiar with them? For anyone who likes
Celtic music -- check them out. They've done a lot of music for the Lord of
the Rings people, apparently -- I think they played at the big Oscar night
party.

Oh, cool! I'm not familiar with them; I'll have to check them out.
I'm going off to the North Texas Irish Festival the weekend after next.
Brother is going to be one of the headliners, and The Piper will be there
with Jiggernaut. (OMG, I love Jiggernaut so much. Whee!)
The guys just played at a *great* folk music festival at the University of
Chicago the weekend before last. Blues, bluegrass, Cajun, Celtic
(including a Portuguese band with Galician bagpipes!) and everything in
between. We had so much fun; it was a wonderful weekend. The whole thing
was run by volunteers, most of them students, and they did a spectacular
job. I highly recommend it to anyone in the area next year! :-)
