To drag this metaphor into fandom, I'm reminded of a brief period of
time that I spent in the lotrips fandom. I found myself brushing up
against the very earliest of the Orlando Bloom fangirls -- and they
were really very interesting to watch from a bit of a distance.

They, to a girl, believed in puppies, and rainbows, and Orlando, and
they would cut a bitch with a "Hello, Kitty" knife if anyone suggested
anything that deviated in the *slightest* from the accepted "canon"
about Orlando -- and would do it with a song in their hearts.

Damn but if that isn't a persuasive sentiment these days.

means something to me. It's still my symbol of rebellion--against a
stagnant status quo, against our hypocritical houses of God, against
people whose minds are closed to others' ideas."
