However, something made me check, & in fact The Gathering was NOT Included
in the Best of HL vhs & book set that came out several years ago.
That's interesting. For those of you who have the DVD set, is it just
the episode or does it have the extra interviews and sword demos that
were done for the other episodes?

This is set in the Korean War, right? If there had been any suspicion that the Captain of a submarine was gay, he would have been out of the military immediately. He certainly wouldn't be given a chance to "redeem" himself by being sent on a top secret mission. While there were undoubtedly gays in the military in 1952 (and 1752 and 1852 and 2002) they were deeply deeply closeted.
And from the pictures, it looks like they have a female officer on board - or along for the secret mission. I don't think so.
OTOH, watching AP play gay will be entertaining.
Wendy (Assuming he is JUST playing.)( BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA)(OK....OK...settle down.)(Sheesh!)(I doubt AP is Canadian.)(Not that there is anything wrong with being Canadian.)(Canadians are just like everyone else except for their Canadianness.)

But it isn't the Korean War. The article says off the waters of North Korea,
and I would doubt he would be facing a courtmartial for engaging an "enemy"
submarine during that conflict. this is most likely set in present day or even
somewhere in the near future.

Except the gay/straight versions may well make Tides TWO crappy movies.
(Which does continue the tradition w/ HL films, especially w/ Endgame--which
we got to see as a crappy theater version, & then as a crappy producers'
cut.) But--back to Tides-- making 2 versions feels like cheating. If it's
not necessary to the plot the character be gay, then why IS he gay at all???

All true, but from all I've read Tides is (roughly) contemporary.

Well, they often dress better. AP's sartorial style alone pegs him as
straight....
