      As I recall, the scene plays out that Richie was hoping that somehow
      everything would be okay, and until wasn't until Duncan said something like,
      "You have to leave," and Richie responded, "It's time then?" that Richie's
      leaving was certain.  I agree that Richie had acted like a juvenile nitwit
      being led around by his dick, and had acted contrary to every piece of
      advice Duncan gave him, and two people died as a result.  I don't blame
      Duncan for feeling that Richie wasn't listening anymore, and it was time for
      him to deal with life and learn its lessons on his own.  However
      well-justified Duncan was, it seemed clear to me that he had decided it was
      time for Richie to leave, and told him that in no uncertain terms.
