I sold all of mine on eBay after reading that anchor bay would finish

get anything for them, I'd better do it before they were all available on

      Sensei Rob writes:

There's actually a lot in this episode, although it seems somewhat
ridiculous at first glance. I'm going to concentrate on the "K'immie",
      Damon Case.

I've always felt Damon Case had much more depth to him than most other
guest Immortals. There was a recent discussion here about absolute and
relative morality, and I think Case is an intriguing character study
into how someone can adopt, and adapt, their world view to suit
immortality and the rules of the Game. (Of course, Cimoli was an extreme
counterpoint to Case, adamantly refusing to accept the reality of his new
      situation).

We're introduced to Damon Case as a man uninterested in physical
pleasures, unlike Duncan's silly French (and now headless) friend. He
considers The Game to be spiritual and holy in nature, and that "ritual
combat" is a necessary part of that life. It gives him a purpose, a reason
for being, an answer to the age-old question... "Why am I here?"

"Ours is not a battle for glory, nor prying eyes."

There are a lot of reasons why Damon Case could evolve a behavioral
code close to religious fanaticism. Holy Ground is a refuge, as is stated
quite explicitly in The Rules. His age (ten centuries) and apparent
ethnicity would lend credence to a Christian/Catholic background. Damon
Case had to have died at some point, and was reborn... the implications
of a resurrection would not have been lost to a man who now spends most
of his time in presumably Christian churches, especially when
accompanied by a chanted Latin soundtrack of religious terms <g>. And let's not
forget the kneeling stance facing an inverted sword, which Case posed
in several times for the symbolically impaired.

So here is a man who adapted his understanding of Immortality to
dovetail into his religious beliefs. He was able to develop a rigid moral
code which wouldn't just allow him to battle other Immortals, but in fact
insisted that he do so. His reason for being immortal was to
participate in the Game, no more, no less. It's an interesting way to adapt one's
understanding of the universe to the reality of being immortal,
creating a new morality in the process.

Was Damon Case immoral? He clearly had a strongly defined sense of what
he considered right and wrong. How about for killing other immortals in
fair combat? For killing those who had no wish to fight?

Was Duncan wrong for protecting Cimoli? For not staying to fight after
Jean-Pierre was killed? For beheading Case for his convictions to
pursue the Game? After all, Duncan was interfering in the Game itself... and
what other purpose for immortality is there, except The Game?

But that's what Highlander is all about.

      -Rob
      SenseiRob@aol.com

      ROB:

You ask (in a superb post) above: "Was Damon Case immoral?"

I caught "the Immortal Cimoli " on the TNN channel (back to being SpikeTV again, eh?) two days ago (7-Aug) and was struck by thoughts about Damon Case that I had not entertained in prievious viewings. In the context of Damon Case's upbringing (most likely in an unbending environment of the RC Church) and his subsequent immortality, his tenacious hold on a rigid dogmatic belief in the Christian Church and its teachings -- I do not believe Case was immoral, per se. I think Duncan MacLeod also recognized Case as being "true" to his personal code -- consider MacLeod's later comments to Amanda in an "exhibition of conscience."

I, too,see Damon Case in a newer light and very current in a post 9-11 world. Here was an Immortal who meshed his reasons for participating in the game, his immortality and his fanatical religious outlook into a seamless whole. Kinda reminds you of that Lawman in "UCoA" for whom the Law "was life."

      Thoughts?

Well, you & your silly muse might try growing up. Or not (& I suspect
      you'll go w/ the not).

Anyone interested in my HL Trivia for the balance of the episodes can email
me off-list, & I'll send the rest privately in a single email for the
questions, followed by a single email for the answers.

      Yes. A scary, immoral fanatic.

Yes. He forced many innocent (& I'm sure some not so innocent)
immortals that didn't wish to fight into fighting for centuries &
murdered them for no good reason. I suppose this does depend upon how
wide (or narrow) your definition of 'immoral' is; it's usually used
as a general characterization for someone/thing that's 'wicked' or
      'bad'.

It's broader definition is of simply, "violating principals of right
& wrong". He was certainly a fanatic (scary in itself)(fanatics are
usually highly irrational), and channeled all his emotions into this
fanaticism of what he thought was 'right & wrong', just so it would
fit his little world & beliefs. And woe to *any* unsuspecting,
innocent immortal who happened to cross his path. Simply because
*he* thought he was right doesn't mean he wasn't violating someone
else's beliefs and principals of right and wrong; and that's a scary
      type of person, imho.
