''JAG'' extends tour of duty at CBS

      By Michael Schneider

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - The military drama ``JAG,'' currently in its fifth
season, has re-enlisted for two years at CBS.

Sources believe CBS will pay producer Paramount Network Television a
per-episode fee in the high $1 million range for the drama. CBS previously
shelled out $1.2 million-$1.3 million per episode for ``JAG.''

Although CBS and Paramount are both owned by Viacom Inc., the ``JAG''
renewal wasn't a slam dunk for either company. Paramount asked for a fee in
the mid- to upper-$2 million range, while CBS offered about $1 million less
      than that.

With ``JAG'' pulling decent numbers on Tuesday night for the CBS, and
lower-rated series such as ``Buffy the Vampire Slayer (news - Y! TV)''
fetching impressive renewal deals, Paramount was well aware that ``JAG's''
profit holders expected the studio to locate the best deal possible
      regardless of family ties.

CBS' exclusive negotiating period over ``JAG'' expired last week. Although
tensions had escalated, the two sides kept talking, and Paramount didn't
take bids on the show from rival networks. Season to date, ``JAG'' averages
      13.1 million viewers.
