      Hi gang,

Well, good news is that Mark and I went to a couple Blockbusters (in
Honolulu) to try to rent Endgame. Every copy was out. So it seems that it
will be picking up good numbers from a video audience. I was also pleased
to see that it is the Producer's cut and am looking forward to seeing it for
myself. Thanks to all who have been posting spoilers about the differences.

Did you watch the "visual effects progression" thing on the DVD
      yet?

It sounds like they did it intentionally. The two editors and the visual
effects person hated the thing. I don't think it was a matter of legal
      clearance.

That was an interesting little segment. It does sound like they were
totally pushed to the limit because of the movie being pushed up a
      month or more.

(My brother is still working on a Miramax movie with March 9
      release date.)

It's that way here in Charleston, SC as well. I finally nabbed one of the
copies that had just come in:). But I finally got to see it! Yes! *Drool*
They had like a whole section for just Endgame with the VHS and they were
all gone and they had like five DVDs and they were gone as well. I overheard
one of the employees say that they can't keep it on the shelf! I love it!

Another reason to come to Maui. The Kahului Blockbusters had 33 copies of
      HL:EG VHS on the shelf last Tuesday (which makes for an impressive display;
I was stunned). I was the 1st to rent one, & every time I've looked since,
the display is totally untouched w/ all copies dutifully waiting. We've
been having glorious weather, though--everyone's at the beach.

You're saying, real live _editors_ (as in--not caterers, not Davis or
Panzer, & not a toddler playing w/ markers) did it that way on purpose?
Created the grey blob? Because _they_ didn't like the sign? So, this was
an honest to God decision _editors_ made all on their very own? Resulting
in something silly & blatant that makes Connor's ultimate Highlander scene a
      big joke?

Several months ago I announced that I was going to move to Texas in a
couple of months. Several events and circumstances conspired to delay
me but I'm finally moving. My computer will be going offline in a
couple of days (so I can pack it) and I won't be back online until
March 3rd or 4th. My service provider will be making sure that I don't
lose any email so I'll be able to catch up when I get back on line.

My email address <ddoug@catrio.org> will NOT change. I set up the
domain catrio.org last May so that I would have a permanent email
      address.

The MediaOne address that the bi-monthly posts are sent from will be
terminated when my system is disconnected from my ISP. In fact any
'@mediaone.net' address that you might have for me will be terminated
      that day.

By now you are all wondering if I will be leaving anyone in charge
      during my absence. <g>

Yes, I will. Wendy Tillis <jjswbt@earthlink.net> has graciously
offered to watch over the list.

She will not be watching the bounce error messages and if you need to
delete your subscription from an account you no longer have access to
just send me email and I'll take care of it when I get back.

I have a question. On the Producers Cut on the
DVD. Connor delivers a Christmas tree to a church
and the priest says that a tree has been coming
every year since either 1787 or 1887 (I think
that is the correct years). What is the
significance of the tree?? Who do you suppose
delivered it during the years Connor was in
Sancutary?? How did Duncan know to to continue
      to deliver it??

I guess it is not really important just curious.

Yeah... that whole sanctuary thing couldn't work either way. If it's HG,
then the follow-up (or lack thereof) to the killings wasn't
appropriate. If it's not HG, then why have sanctuary in the first place?

It's a plot that doesn't work either way.

No, that's not what I'm saying (surprise, surprise). I don't know for
certain who was making *final* decisions on the DVD -- do you? I
would be very surprised, however, if it was anyone other than Bill
Panzer and Peter Davis, particularly since this is labelled as a
      producer's cut.

What I am saying is that the two editors in that segment and the
visual effects supervisor (who is not an editor and has a totally
different job) didn't like the sign and had a voice in changing it.
That doesn't mean the decision was theirs and theirs alone. Again,
it's that whole "collaborative process" thing you seem to be having
      trouble with.

Considering that he's working about 14 hours a day, he obviously
hasn't had the chance to see it.

And since you don't think editors are anything but technical flunkies
anyway, why would you care what his opinion is? But perhaps
once's he's done with this movie, he can suggest some books for
people without any knowledge of film production whatsoever about
the post-production process, so that you could learn for yourself
what it is that editors do, and perhaps also learn to distinguish
between a visual effects artist and an editor. But then again, it's
easier to make broad, sweeping statements about who did what
without actually having a clue as to what the realities involved, so
why bother taking the time to learn something?

I *knew* it was intentional (no one could make that kind of mess by mistake!) ...the question was one of technique. Did they (whomever "they" was) have to do such a bad job of it?

It's as if someone associated with the film decided they hated Adrian's butt and decided to "fix" it by drawing a tattoo on it freehand with magic marker on the master print. If the sign offended them so much, couldn't it be removed in such a way that it didn't detract from the scene? I mean, with all the computer generated effects available today...was creating a "smudge" where the JVC sign was the only option?

Well, yeah, sorry -- I meant, choice to do it as opposed to no choice
except to do it because of a clearance problem.

Exactly. I'm sure it could have done better if they had unlimited time
and resources. Just given the whole nature of things Highlander, I
      doubt they had either.

I did think the color timing in the grave scene was improved from
the release version. It's funny that if you watch the visual effects
thing, they show you the original shot they had for the background,
which actually *is* of the Highlands, but looks like the Alps :)
