********************** Highlander's Daughter Part 6 ***********************

Duncan and Devon's flight arrived in New York at 3:30 in the afternoon. Devon
was lucid, but dazed and Duncan felt safe only leaving her for a moment to
call Amanda. He was surprised when Amanda insisted on meeting them at the
airport, although Duncan knew it would be far easier to take a cab to
her penthouse. Come to think of it, Amanda had sounded extremely anxious-
unusual behavior for her.

Duncan busied himself with retrieving their few pieces of luggage from the
baggage claim, then led Devon to the area where he had arranged to meet
Amanda. Devon had not spoken a complete sentence since she had regained
conciousness early that morning. As they waited for Amanda, Duncan studied
Devon's chisled profile and wondered if she had again lost her memory. She
turned suddenly and gave him a small, wan smile.

"Do you remember anything, Devon?"

Devon's brow knitted in concentration. "Bits and pieces." She paused as if the
effort of those few words taxed her. " I remember a man...touching me...then
blinding light...then nothing."

"But you know who you are? Who I am?"

Duncan caught his breath at the intensity of Devon's gaze. "Of course I know
you, Duncan MacLeod." She held him captive with her eyes for a second longer,
then looked away. "As for myself, I doubt I'll ever solve that mystery."
Duncan felt sadness well up inside him and he reached out to brush a red
tress from her forehead. She turned her face toward his hand, and he
found himself cupping her cheek, stroking the silky skin delicately, tenderly.
His stare focused on her sensual mouth and he began to draw her to him,
only to have the moment shattered by another pulsing buzz and the dulcet
tones of an immortal woman who could only be Amanda.

"Duncan!" The dark haired beauty strode towards him. "I hope you haven't
been waiting too long, dear, traffic was awful, as always." Amanda leaned
in to kiss Duncan, then gasped as she caught sight of Devon's pale visage.
"Oh my God. Joanna, I knew it was you!" She pushed past Duncan and threw
her arms around a startled Devon. Tears leaked from beneath Amanda's closed
lids as ahe pressed a soft kiss against Devon's neck. "Oh Joanna, when I
heard that Duncan had found you, I tried to call, and then he said that
he was coming to New York with a guest and I prayed it was you!" She
pulled away and met Devon's stunned eyes with a stare that flushed her
cheeks with its heat.

Duncan looked from one immortal to the other in utter confusion. "Um, I
don't mean to interrupt, but would one of you like to explain what is going
on here? Amanda how do you know Devon...er, Joanna?" Amanda tore herself away
from Devon with extreme difficulty and wiping her cheeks, focused her bright,
ecstatic gaze on Duncan.

"Duncan, wherever did you find her? I have looked for her," she turned back
to Devon, "for you for so long. I had given up about twenty years ago- I
suspect that Connor deliberately kept you from me." To Duncan, Amanda
explained, "We knew each other a long time ago you see, in Paris. We became
very intimate...friends and then one day, Joanna just disappeared. I tried
everywhere, but finally I received a message that Joanna had gone back
to Scotland with Connor. I wanted to keep in touch, but Connor made it
rather difficult." Amanda's expression hardened slightly. Then, her
glowing happiness was back and she cupped Devon's cheek, exactly as Duncan
had done earlier.

Devon pushed Amanda's hand away and stepped backwards. "I am sorry. I do not
know you. I'm afraid that you haven't heard about my...loss." At Amanda's
frown, Devon went on hesitantly. "About eight years ago, I lost my memory.
It's kind of a long story, but let me just say that I now go by the name
Devon Rothschild...and I do not remember anything of Joanna MacLeod." Amanda
backed away herself and her expression closed off, shielding an intense pain.
"I'm sorry if I hurt you, Amanda."

"I see," Amanda replied tonelessly. "Well, I'm sorry myself if I embarrassed
or confused you. I will not speak of it again." Taking a brief moment to
compose herself, she flashed a strained smile to Duncan. "Shall we find a cab
and get back to the house?" She took off, walking briskly just ahead of
the other immortals.

Duncan hefted up the bags and turned to Devon. But she had already started
forward, trying to catch up with Amanda. He shook his head, and followed
them to a waiting cab.
