Ya know... this one got me thinking. I know we talk about Amanda as being
a whore, but was she really?
Amanda said..."I was never cheap." I think she used the skills available to her as a woman, and many times that meant may have trading bodily fluids for good food, interesting clothes and a warm place to sleep. And at no time do we ever see where Amanda was really unhappy with her life.

I was getting ready to start the next commentary, when I took a quick look
at the Chronicle entries for this episode on the dvd. Turns out I was
wrong. Duncan wasn't the Horsemaster for the Duchess, he was the Riding
Master (certainly seems appropriate to me, given all the riding he was
doing, of whatever kind). The Chronicle entry was amusing, and it is quoted
below:
"Some men are just born with an uncanny ability to land on their feet.
There MacLeod was, not a shilling in his purse, sleeping beneath the stars,
trapping his own dinner because he couldn't afford an inn until he managed
to reach his bank holdings in London. The day was hot, the travel sweaty,
and there was no one around (or so he thought) when he reached an inviting
stream. He'd barely stripped off his dusty knickers and waded in when here
she comes, the beautiful Duchess of Somerset, and her riding party.
Although she feigned a good show of embarrassment, it was clear to all
involved she was quite impressed with what she saw. The next thing I know,
he's been invited to her home for dinner, and is now installed as the new
Riding Master, at a handsome stipend. Although, to be perfectly frank, very
few horses seem to be involved in his "official duties." He does lead a
charmed life, our Duncan MacLeod.

I thank you for this note. This had been one of my favorite episodes.

yeah!!!!!

I don't really think of Amanda a whore, although I suppose she may have been one at some time or another. Whoring might have been marginally safer than thieving, but she does *so* enjoy stealing! She could, of course, have combined the two...whores have been known to steal from their clients. And there have been times when a woman who slept with any man other than her husband was considered a whore..so I guess she could qualify under that definition.

I think Amanda likes men. Without any concern about unwanted children or disease and with no particular need to worry about her reputation (which she would leave behind in each town and century <eg>) she was free to indulge herself. The fact that so many men were ..enchanted ..enough to support and protect her was a not inconsiderable benefit.

I don't know that I would say she doesn't depend on anyone. I think she often depends on whatever male she is with to protect her. It's not so much that she hides behind men as that she maneuvers them into doing the fighting for her. That may keep her "in control" but it does make her dependant on them. I have trouble believing that she would have survived 1200 years on the strength of her own sword skills.

This was the only time I felt squeamish about HL showing off Adrian's body. There was just something in the scene that pulled me back to reality - so that I was conscious of *Adrian* and not Duncan. I think it was something in the way he quickly pulls the robe around him and ties it that said, to me, that Adrian wasn't 100% comfortable with the shot. There was no real need for him to have the robe open *except* to show off his underwear to the viewers.
>So I'm shallow. Live with it.
No denying it was a pleasant view :-)
Wendy(I'd always figured Duncan for a boxer kind of guy)(See, I can do shallow too <eg>)

Actually, in a commentary on an earlier episode, Adrian mentions that he
frequently had "discussions" with the producers, writers, directors, etc.,
about the fact that he wasn't comfortable running around without a shirt
unless there was some good dramatic reason for it. That statement, however,
contradicts a scene (about which *I* felt squeamish) in the short-lived
series "Tracker", which Adrian produced, in which he does what seems to me
to be a completely gratuitous bump-and-grind striptease. Perhaps his point
of view about gratuitous displays of flesh changed when it was *his*
investment money on the line.
And, having done these commentaries, I can now state that there is firm
canon evidence that Duncan wears boxers when he wears loose trousers, and
"tighty whities" when he wears jeans. Hey, it's important to know these
things!

OK If we think or not think Amanda a whore what does that make Duncan?

Given that Duncan was essentially trading sexual performance for monetary
support from the Duchess of Somerset, I suppose that makes him a gigolo. I
got the impression he did that more than once in his life (the scenes from
the episode about Gabriel Piton come to mind).
