Charlie answered it, then called to Duncan in the gym, where he was sparring with Richie. "Hey MacLeod?" "Yeah, Charlie?" Richie swung at him, and Duncan flipped him over on his back. "You got a phone call." "Tell 'em I'll call 'em back." He pulled Richie to his feet. "C'mon, try again," he encouraged. "No, man, this sounds important. Some guy callin' from London." Duncan turned away from Richie. "Did he give a name?" "Fitz something or other, I dunno." Charlie looked exasperated. "You gonna answer it or not?" "I'll be right there." "Fitzcairn?" Richie asked. "Probably. Wait here." Duncan went into the office and picked up the phone, motioning for Charlie to leave. He did so, shutting the door behind him. "Hello, Fitzcairn?" "Duncan! Good to talk to you!" "What's going on?" He didn't like the false cheerfulness in Fitz's voice. "Well, I've got a bit of a problem, you see, and I..." "And you want me to take care of it? What kind of problem?" "There's this girl, Duncan..." "An immortal?" "Yes, but very young. She's in terrible trouble. I've done my best but I just can't do anymore." Fitz sounded defeated, like he was at his wit's end. "What kind of trouble?" "I don't precisely know. She's really good, Duncan, amazing. She kicked *my* arse all over the salon." Duncan laughed. "That's not terribly hard to believe. Look, send her over. Just one thing, Fitz. Are you sure she is who she says she is?" "I checked it out, sh'e only a fledgling. In fact, I was the one who found her, about a year ago." "So you don't know what kind of trouble she's in, but you're worried enough to send her to me? Is that right?" "It's rather hard to explain, MacLeod. She'll do a much better job than I can." "All right, then. Give me a call when she leaves. I'll pick her up at the airport.' "'Tis a deal then," Fitz said, and broke the connection. Duncan stood staring at the phone for a moment, then went back out to the gym. Richie looked at him expectantly. "Well?" "We're going to have a visitor for a while." "Fitz?" "No, she's... Damn. I never asked her name." Duncan mentally cursed his stupidity. "_She_?" Richie repeated, with widening eyes. "Hands off, Richie, or I'll have your head." Duncan spun on his heel and left. ********* further parts will be forthcoming =========================================================================
