He'd read them through a dozen times since he'd gotten them, and nothing. He kept hitting dead ends. But something told him - keep *searching*, it's here, somewhere. If Shae was indeed a reincarnation, as he suspected, then *somewhere* the link would be with an ancient immortal. Someone who knew Darius. Damn. He went back to the first folder, the very earliest material. Darius, Aria, others long dead with names he could not pronounce. Rough and unpractised sketches, the only face he recognised was Darius. Later, Greyson, others he'd heard tales of, a few women here and there. Fierce warriors, monks, minstrels, not a bloody one still alive. But wait! He found something he'd overlooked - Fitzcairn had come over to England, yet a fledgling, in the late 12th century. How had he forgotten?! Was it mere coincidence that Fitz had been the one to find Shae? He wondered if he should call Fitz. And say what? Tell me your life story so I can figure out why Shae became immortal because, heh heh, believe it or not, it's relevant. Good God. He covered his eyes with his hands and sighed heavily. Shae had been right the other day, this *was* getting more absurd by the moment. He'd call Fitz in if... no, *when* he got something concrete. Perhaps if he went back over the women. He shuffled through the papers, picking out a total of eight women. He wrote their names down: Aria, Morgan, Laea, Selene, Ashe, Neit, Timiko, Tajoe. They were mostly warriors; except Neit, who had been an Egtptian priestess, and had died in the year 9 AD. They had all travelled extensively. And they had all known Darius, with the likewise exception of Neit. He found it amusing seven out of the eight had been fighters - women hadn't always been oppressed. Alot of them had asterisks by their names, indicating to "See Legend File." He checked the labels on the folders - of course. Dawson hadn't given him any legend file. Hmm. Wonder why? There were 6 with the asterisk - Aria, Selene, Ashe, Neit, Timiko, and Tajoe. He made a mental note to speak to Dawson about the sexism of the records - little more than name, date of death, and the area where they came from was mentioned. On the other hand, there were pages and pages at a time on every one of the men. Well this is certainly turning out to be worthless. Just the same... He starred the names with the asterisk, and scribbled down the basic facts. He left out Aria, remembering the secret Darius had told him about her. Besides, last he knew, she was still alive. Morgan was a warrior, and Celtic. She had died in 1214. Laea was also a Celtic warrior, and died in 938. Selene was a Greek warrior, and died in 527 AD. Ashe was... *unkown*, a warrior, and died in 1197. Neit, the Egyptian priestess, had died in 9 AD, so didn't matter. Timiko was a Japanese samurai, and died in 1181. Tajoe was a Gallic warrior, and died in 1043. Nothing, really. Still, he though he might ask Joe for the legend files. He got up, leaving the papers on the table and went to call Dawson. ********************* sorry for the posting delays further parts will be forthcoming =========================================================================
