Comments: Resent-From: Aubrey Summerlin From: Aubrey Summerlin THE UNRULY CHILD PART 3 by Aubrey Summerlin Johnny crept silently through the dark alleyway, avoiding the trash cans and winos as he neared the streetcorner. He sensed four people up ahead of him. Johnny drew his gun from beneath his jacket and lept into the middle of the group. "Die, Phunks!" yelled Johnny as he took two down within seconds. Johnny paused to draw his other gun, the big one he stole from some suburban house, and the other two Phunks, a rival gang of Johnny's, unholstered their own pieces and fired. Johnny was hit four times as he drew his gun. The searing pain of the projectiles entering his flesh caused him to reel backwards, but not fall down. Almost immediately, Johnny's body began to go to work, repairing the damage and dissolving the bullets until he was as he was before he was shot. Johnny smiled at the now frightened gang members Then, he calmly gunned them down. "Alright, Johnny. This is a Scottish Basket Hilt Backsword. It has one cutting edge, and I advise you remember that well. The Basket guard protects your hand while you parry and riposte. Lets see you hold it." Connor gave lessons to Johnny on fencing and other martial arts he would need once the Game began. Two weeks ago, Johnny had never held a sword before, now he was respectable looking, if not ready to actually challenge anyone. "No, like this. Don't parry there when you don't have to. You leave yourself open in 6," Connor corrected. "I'm sorry, Mr. MacLeod," apologized Johnny, "Is this it?" "Yes. OK, take a few minutes to rest." As Connor walked off to get some water, Johnny glared at Connor's neck, thinking about how great the prize was going to be. As Connor sipped from the fountain, a sickening feeling settled in his stomach. He walked back to where Johnny sat. "There's another immortal here." The look on Johnny's face said he knew, too. The sound of doors opening behind them caused them both to turn their heads. A tall, red haired girl, in her mid to late twenties walked in. "Excuse me," she said tentatively." I don't know why I'm here; something just drew me to this place.I should go. There must be some mistake" She turned to leave."I'm sorry to have bothered you." "Wait," interrupted Connor, "This is where you should be." Connor, Johnny, and the girl sat down at a table in Connor's suite. The girl sipped coffee and Connor spoke soothing words, considering what she had just learned. "Allison, you are immortal. Rejoice that you get a second chance at life." Connor told her. "But I want to grow old with my husband, not watch my kids die, and my grandkids, and, oh, I want to die! This is a curse!" She seemed to have quite a grasp on the negative implications of being immortal. Connor remembered what he went through after losing Heather. "Don't go there, William. You know the stories. That place is haunted!" Two boys looked down on a small farm in 1600's Scotland. "It's been cursed for over 100 years!" "That's just a story to scare us off, Tommy. Come on, lets go. We'll get to take whatever we find, since it doesn't belong to anyone anymore!" Tommy shrugged his shoulders and followed William running down the hill torwards the house in the middle of the farm. It was a crude home, looking like it had been hastily constructed next to the castle ruins. The years had not been kind, but the walls and roof were still there, and some nights, light could be seen coming from inside. The boys slowed as they neared the door, then they crept up to a window to peek inside. Each boy lifted his head up just high enough to see inside when a razor sharp katana whistled through the air and split the windowsill between the boys. They looked up and saw an unshaven hermit standing at the windows, holding a sword over his head as if to strike. Recovering fro the initial shock, Tommy and William fell over backwards and ran away, never dreaming to visit the farm again. Connor knew what Allison would have to endure. Johnny didn't seem to grasp what immortality meant. He would teach them. Others would come, and he would teach them all.
