It also does not deal with any of the chaacters in the highlander series. Except a small reference to Darius. It also deals with some more fantasical musings of A powerfull imortal can do with the quickening. Its also a prologe to a story dealing with 2 Immortals which I plan to base a series of stories on. Flame on!!! =} Rebirth: Prolog (Kansas City, Missouri 1974) Do these guys ever stop? Roland asked himself as he ducked behind the box in the alley. After three thousand years fighting Immortals, it looks like the hunters will release his Quickening back to our Mother. Do they have no honor? It was an obvious set up, why didn't he see through it? How could they be so cruel to use a fourteen-year-old girl like that? They know him well. His fatherly instinct is too strong for his own good... * * * The last costumer left the bookstore and Roland locked up for the last time. He was going back home to Ireland and the origin spot of stonehenge to do some Quickening work. As he turned the closed sign over he saw a scuffle on the other side of the dimly lit street. It appeared to be a prostitute and her pimp in an argument. They are really coming out of the taverns and on to the streets lately. The man was beginning to get rough with her. Roland unlocked the door and step out. "Excuse me," he bellowed across the nearly empty street, "is there a problem here?" The man glared in Roland's direction. "Its none of your business, Man. If you know whats good for you get back into that shop and forget about this." "Well it is my bussiness. This kind of activity scares the costumers away." "Help me," the young lady pleaded, "please?" "Shut up bitch!" The man yelled to her as he backhanded her across the cheek. "Let the woman go!" Roland intoned as he used his power to be on the pimp in a flash. "That was a mistake mister," the man spits out as he swung a punch at Roland. Roland blocked the meager swing to the side, grabbed the arm, and twisted it behind the assailant's back. Roland shoves the man down the street. "If I ever see you on the street again I will not be so easy on you!" Roland called after the man. "Are you okay Miss?" Up close Roland could tell that underneath all that face paint there was a girl that could not be over sixteen. "Yes," she sobbed lightly. "My name is Roland. Roland Addison." "Carie," she whimpered. "You thirsty? I have some cokes in the shop." She just nodded and Roland took her across the street and into his bookstore and led her to the upstairs apartment over looking the first floor shop. "There is a bathroom through there. Why don't you go freshen up while I get some cokes." She didn't even nod but instead went into the bathroom. Roland thought as he got a couple of bottles of coke. He sat down in a chair as he heard the sound of running water emitting from the bathroom. He opened the bottles and set one on the coffee table next to the couch. The bathroom door opened and Roland saw that his original shot at Carie's age was wrong. She looked no older then fourteen! He kept his composure and gestured Carie to sit on the couch across from him. She flopped down on the couch with one leg draped over the side. Carie reached for the coke tentatively and took a sip. "Thank you, Mr. Addison." "Please, call me Roland," the Immortal suggested. "Thank you... Roland." She whispered lightly and inserted the opening and neck of the bottle suggestively between her lips. "Miss, aren't you too young to try to seduce a man old enough to be your father?" "I'm eighteen, sir." "Again, please call me Roland. And you are no where near eighteen." "But Steve will kill me if I don't get any money out of this, especially after the way you humiliated him." "Why are you on the streets selling yourself, you look about fourteen. You should be in school. Your parents must be worried." "No, My daddy died 2 years ago when I was twelve, and my mom couldn't find work so I left home. And Steve found me and I guess you know the rest." "Yes, I guess I do." "Roland, if I don't give Steve some money he will surely kill me!" "Carie, how would you like to live with me?" "What would I have to do?" The not-so little little girl said reluctantly. "Nothing, just allow me to give you an education. I used to be a teacher a while back. I'd hate to see someone to go through life with missed opportunities. I won't ask for you to share my bed. I'll take the couch." Carie looked at Roland questioningly. "We'll give it a couple of days and we'll see." "Fair enough. You have some things you want at your place?" "Yes. but I don't think we should go over there." "Don't worry. I'll go there by myself. I'll ask my neighbor, Tracy, to come over. I think you'll like her. She owns the herbalist store." * * * ---- wildfire@halcyon.com http://www.halcyon.com/wildfire/home.html =========================================================================
