Denton Many, many things went through Anne's head as she drove to the dojo. She wanted to see him, to talk to him, to try and understand what he was, to just *be* with him. When she stopped the car at a stoplight, her mind driffted back to an earlier conversation she had with someone about her dilema. (Yes, folks, Anne's having a flashback of her own!) "Anne? Hello? You there?" Someone waved a hand in front of Anne's face. She blinked, shook her head and looked up. Only to find that the owner of the hand was Kim, a resident who had been at the hospital no more than 6 months. Despite that fact Anne had become friends with Kim and now Kim stood in front of Anne with a quizical look on her face. "Hi, Kim. I didn't see you walk in." Anne was sitting in the hospital cafeteria supposedly to eat lunch but she had done nothing but play with her food. Kim laughed. "I'm not surprised. You looked like you were on another planet. Mind if I join you?" "No, please have a seat." "Let me get something to eat." While Kim walked over to select her lunch, Anne once again attempted to eat the salad she had bought but she just picked at it. Her mind was still on Duncan and what to do about him. Kim walked back to the table, grilled cheese sandwich in one hand, a bottle of juice in the other. Anne looked at the Kim's selection as Kim sat down. "A grilled cheese sandwich?" Anne asked. Kim looked at her across the table. "Don't even think about giving me a lecture Anne. If I'm going to die, I'll die happy. At least I intend to *eat* my lunch instead of picking at like some people I know." Eyes dancing, Kim bit into the sandwich and made quite a show of eating, then swallowing it. In spite of herself, Anne laughed. "I hope you choke on that." Kim paused before bitting into the sandwich again. "No you don't." She said. "You'd be bored without me." Anne sat there and watched Kim finish the sandwich, then start on the bottle of juice. Kim was half way through the bottle when she put it down on the table and looked at Anne. "What's his name?" "What?" Surprise evident in Anne's voice. "What's his name?" Kim repeated. "Something's bothering you or else you would be eating that salad instead of playing with it. I assume it's a guy. So what's his name?" Anne paused before answering. "What makes you think something bothering me?" "In the short time I've known you, I've never seen you play with your food *unless* something was bothering you. So what is it? Or should I say *who* is it?" Anne thought before answering. Maybe if she told Kim a little, she could get a different view point. Joe had helped but he was of the wrong gender to *really* help. Sometimes it helped just to talk to another woman or *man* as the case may be. (Author's note: The above statement is *not* a slam against men. It's just my personal oppinion.) "Duncan. His name is Duncan." "You mean I was right? Damn, I am good. I just guessed." Kim leaned across the table. "What happened?" "Well,..." Anne chewed on her lip for a moment. "It's more like what didn't happen or what didn't get said. Does that make any sense?" Kim sat back. "Yeah." Pause. "He hid something from you?" Anne nodded. "Something important?" "I think so." "What was it?" "I'd rather not say." "Okay. Well,huh..." Silence descended, for a few moments at least. "Was it something like he's in the Witness Protection Program or he's a wanted criminal or....Help me out here Anne." "Something like that." "He's a wanted criminal!?" "No!" "Oh. Then he was someone else and he didn't tell you?" "Kind of." "I see, I think." "Sorry I can't tell you more, but you wouldn't believe me if I told you anyway." Kim looked at her. Anne shrugged her shoulders. "Do you love him? I mean, *really* love him. Enough to forgive him for not telling you?" Anne sat there, thinking. Of course she loved him. She wouldn't be agonizing over what he had told her if she didn't. "Yes, I do." She said simply. "Enough to forgive him? Enough to be able to deal with whatever he is or was or did or whatever?" "I don't know." Anne replied, softly. Kim glanced at her watch, then stood, gathering her trash. "I've got to go but listen..." She leaned on table and looked down at Anne. "That's what you've got to ask yourself. Do you love him enough to be able to handle whatever problems he's got. If you can't answer that question truthfully, way down deep in bottom of your heart, you probably don't belong with him." She straighted. "I'll be around to talk if you want to. Bye." She turned and walked off. Anne just sat there, unable to think of what to do. >HONK!< A car horn blared behind her snapping Anne out of her reverie. She looked up at the light, waved to the car behind and pulled forward. She now knew the answer to her problem. The next question was would Duncan accept it? ***************************************************************** The cold, clear air blowing through the car as Duncna drove back to the loft helped clear his head. Joe had been right. What he had done last night *had* been stupid. He hadn't done anything that dumb in a long time. What had he been *thinking*? That was the problem, he *hadn't* been thinking. He had just gone out and gotten drunk in a vain attempt to forget and it hadn't worked. It never worked. Now, as he drove through the streets of Seattle he could only hope that Anne would come back, if only to tell him she never wanted to see him again. He couldn't force her to come back, he could only hope. As he pulled the T-bird into one of the two parking spots behind the dojo, he felt *it*, that tingling, faintly naesous sensation that told him another Immortal was close by. He got out of the car and walked to the stairs, hoping it was just Richie. He didn't want to fight today, his heart just wasn't in it. Unfortunately, it wasn't Richie. Instead a tall, thin man with hawk like features and jet black hair stepped out from the shadows near the staircase. He was dressed in a conservative button down shirt and slacks and carried what looked like, at least to Duncan, a Revolutionary War era officer's sabre. The men stepped in front of the stairs, effectively blocking Duncan's way. "I am Jack Russell. I think you know why I'm here." Duncan tried to step around the man. "Come back some other time." He didn't succeed in getting around the man. "I don't think so." The man shoved Duncan, who stumbled backwards. "Now, either you can fight me or I can just take your head and be done with it. I'd rather not, no challenge to that." Duncan glared at the man. This was not what he needed today but he had no choice. He took his katana out of his coat, shrugged it off and took the appropriate stance in front of the man. "I am Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. If you want a fight, I'll give you one." There was a moment of silence, then the two men began to fight. ****************************************************************************** Anne paced the length of the loft again for what seemed like the 1,000th time. She wondered where Duncan could be. She had come in through the dojo and gone up the loft almost an hour ago. She had run into Richie while she had been waiting for the elevator. He had been *thrilled* to see her but was on his way out the door. He had told her that Duncan wasn't upstairs as far as he knew and no he didn't know where Duncan could be. He had flashed a smile at her, then disappeared out the door. Moments later, she heard the sound of a motorcycle starting up, then fadding in the distance. She was surprised when she reached the loft. It was a mess. (Well, not a total mess) The bed hadn't been made, there were clothes scattered everywhere, she was almost afraid to see what the bathroom looked like. So, that's what she had done for the first half-an-hour. She had partially cleaned the loft, if only to keep her mind off where Duncan was. A sound from outside got her attention. It sounded like...metal on metal. >>It couldn't be.<< Anne thought. She had finally come to accept what Duncan had told her but couldn't believe it was actually true (Authors note: Does that make any sense at all?) She looked out the window overlooking the steps that led up to the front door of the dojo and what she saw almost made her heart stop. Duncan, the man she loved, the man she had agonized over for the last week was in the middle of a swordfight. As she looked on in horror, she saw Duncan trip the other man and then (she gluped) cut off his head. The other man, now headless fell over on the pavement. Then she saw something that did make her heart stop. A huge lightening bolt came from nowhere and struck Duncan, knocking him to his knees. Anne watched, unable to move, as bolt after bolt struck him, as his body twiched and convulsed with lightening. Finally, the lightening stopped, Duncan fell over on his side and didn't move. Anne spun around from the window and ran to the stairs. The door at the top of the stairs banged open as she flew down the stairway. She ran to Duncan and dropped to her knees at his side. >>He's dead.<< She thought. >>I took too long.<< She started to cry, then the doctor in her took over. She checked for a pulse and was amazed when she found one. >>I don't believe it.<< She thought. >>He's alive.<< While Anne was crouched over him, Duncan began to come around. "Uhhuhuhu." He moaned. Very slowly, he opened his eyes and saw Anne. He blinked. Anne brushed the tears from her eyes. "Anything else you want to tell me?" THE END!!! ******************************************************************************* Okay, folks. I'm finally done!! Thanks for waiting so patiently and for all the kind words. I would like to thank the people who answered my question regarding the medical community. (Sherlock is only one I can think of right now) Along with the people who gave me ideas that I worked into the story. Thanks!!!! I might do an epilouge and/or a sequel. Let me know if you want one. I got to get this off now before I get kicked out of the lab. (They close in 5 minutes) Thanks!!! It's been fun.
