The jump into the river was perilous, but fortunately the river didn't carry him miles downstream. He hopes Ryan is as lucky. He gathers the strength to stand. Blood trickles lightly from a gash in his head, but it will heal quickly enough. He begins to search for Ryan. He cannot yet sense him; he must still be *dead*. He begins scanning the banks for Ryan. He spots a crumpled form lying face down in a shallow niche of the river. Ryan indeed has the *luck of the Irish*. Duncan rushes to him. He turns him over, places his arms under and around Ryan's chest, and begins pulling him further upon the shore. All the while, his mind is reeling. *No, No, NO!!. I'm going crazy. It's got to be the cut on my head. Yeah, that's it; I'm delusional.* On and on, the litany continues. As he is mentally arguing with himself, Ryan awakens with Duncan's hands still on his chest. Ryan immediately jumps up. Duncan is still momentarily dumbfounded. Dropping his hands to his side, he faces Ryan. Ryan immediately turns from him. *Damn it! Look at me!* The shock subsides replaced with anger as Duncan continues, *You've lied to me all this time. How could you? I thought we were friends, good friends! But you're a liar!* Duncan's anger rises as does his voice, till he is practically shouting. *You've paraded yourself as a man for the last three months! What kind of fool do you take me for? Did you think I wouldn't find out? God, I can't stand a liar!* Ryan, who had been handling this verbal assault rather calmly, is now furious. *Oh, *I'm* a liar, am I? What about you Duncan! Don't *you* pass yourself off as a mortal man every day? Or is that different? It's okay for the great Duncan Mcleod to lie, just not be lied to, right? Well, buddy, I think you've been living too long on that mortal highground of yours. The lack of oxygen there is affecting your brain!* Ryan too is shouting now, as Duncan becomes the one on the defensive. However, before he can begin, Ryan continues. *Look Duncan, we can debate this forever or we can get past it. I won't apologize for doing what I feel was justified, but I will apologize for hurting you. That was never intended.* Duncan takes a close look at his friend. *How could I have not seen it*, he thinks as he takes in the curve of her hips, the full lips, and flaxen colored hair. The real giveaway is the eyes, however. The hazel green eyes screaming their emotions at him. No man has such depth of feeling, no matter how sensitive he is. His mind is lost as he stares into those eyes. The only thought he can manage to enuciate is *You've seen me naked.* Suddenly, the canyon is alive with laughter. *Oh God! In the end, it always comes down to sex! Okay my dear, good friend, I'll even out the score!* Ryan begins undressing. There is no come on, no sense of humiliation or degradation in this act. Ryan simply takes off her clothes as if she were doing the laundry. She waits a moment, as if to let Duncan drink in every detail, and then walks to him. They stand face to face, nose to nose, eye to eye. A casual observer would misinterpret this scene as hostile. Ryan's face breaks into a huge smile, accentuating her feminine features, as she extends her hand and says *Duncan Mcleod, I'm Reya O'Malley.*.... Duncan moves away from the window. The loft has become eerily quiet. He shivers as a chill passes through him. This ride he knows, is not over. Reya consumed too much of his heart for it to be a brief escapade. He walks over to the bed and practically collapes. The sadness he feels clings to him like a second skin. Alone with his memories, he allows himself a rare privilage - he cries. --- ~ SLMR 2.1a ~ =========================================================================
