Part 4 An original story based on the HIGHLANDER TV Series By: Jen Thrailkill Chapter 6 Caitlynn did learn from her mistake, and her life started to change in the time she was with Duncan and Anne. She socialized more instead of keeping to herself, and she learned she could make friends easily. She began to talk more and began coming out of her shell. She never left the house without her saber, and she was ready and waiting for Jayden's next move. Duncan and Anne had no problem leaving her by herself nor letting her go out alone or with her friends. They trusted her, and if she was going to be out late, she'd call. She was growing up before their eyes. She had always been a late bloomer, and it amazed them how quickly she changed from a shy girl, to an upbeat woman. Anne's motherly instincts kicked in when it came to Cat. She was at a difficult age in her life, and not having a mother around when she needed it upset her. And Anne found out her father never told her the things girls need to know. She needed to know things, especially since she was going to be fifteen forever. So Anne taught her all the things a girl her age needed to know such as cooking, sewing, shopping, and about boys. Anne knew she was naive and that someone needed to tell her about boys and sex. Since she was a doctor, she was able to answer all of Cats' questions. And there were a lot even though it didn't matter. Immortals couldn't have children, but she still wanted to know. Her training with Duncan continued, and she was gaining self confidence. Duncan also got use to have a young person around the house. Caitlynn brought joy and happiness to the couple when things got rough. The both looked forward to the arrival of the baby, even Cat started to enjoy it. With each passing day, Caitlynn grew more confident in her self, and in her ability. She was beginning to accept the fact she was immortal, and in a way, she loved having that power even though she would never think of abusing it. Duncan had told her that some Immortals do and she thought it seemed like it was private. He had also told her that many Immortals keep it from their family and friends like he had with Anne. When she talked about it with Anne, she could understand by the way Anne responded. Anne still felt the whole thing was strange and couldn't believe that even though she saw Duncan die, examined him to make sure, she was living with him. "Love has that affect on people" Anne had said. One evening, while Duncan was out running errands, Caitlynn walked in from being at the River, and sat down next to Anne. "What does it feel like to be in love? How do you know when you've found the right guy?" "Is there someone you're interested in?" "Sort of. I've never met him, but I've heard things about him and I've seen his picture. He's cute." "Well, you just know if its right. Things like you get this warm feeling, it feels as if you have sawdust on your tongue when you try to talk to him, your heart beats faster. Where did you see his picture?" Cat paused for a moment, not knowing if she should say. So she looked around the room and stopped at a picture of Duncan's friend Richie, taken with his motorcycle. He was wearing all black, and sunglasses that covered his eyes. Even though she couldn t see them she had a feeling he had the most gorgeous eyes to go with the rest of his gorgeous muscular body. Anne started to look around for what she was looking at, when the phone rang. Picking it up she said, "Hello? Oh hi Richie." Cat got a big smile on her face, and it was the first time Anne had seen her smile. That's when Anne realized Cat was looking about Richie, and she tried to hold back her laughter. "We're fine. How are you? Get into in trouble lately? That's good. I assume you have your head on straight or at least on. Ok, sorry, it wasn't funny. No, he's not here, he's out running errands, but I'll tell him you called. OK... As soon as he gets back I'll have him call you. Ok. Bye." Cat still had a smile on her face, and Anne couldn't help but give a little laugh. "You mean Richie don't you?" she asked. Richie would have gotten a kick out of this. He liked to flirt with women, and like Duncan, he had had his share of girls having crushes on him as well as them having a few crushes of their own. They both had a way with women, and Richie used it to his advantage. "Was it that obvious?" "A little bit." "What can you tell me about him. How old is he? Where is he? and does he like younger women?" "Richie and Duncan have been friends for a while. He was a troubled kid, and Duncan took him in and set him straight. Now he's a big flirt, but a real sweetheart. He's part of the reason why I'm here. He helped talk Duncan into telling me he was alive. He's a real big daredevil and a risk taker. That's why he's not here. "What happened?" Cat asked looking concerned. "He was racing his bike, and crashed. He died in front of thousands of people." "Do you mean he's Immortal too? I can't believe this. All the good looking guys are either taken or Immortal. I could get into this!" she said starting to get excited. "Yes, he is, and not all guys are like that. His first love is his bike, his second is his women. He's in his early twenties, and I hate to disappoint you, but, he probably has a girlfriend or two, and he's too old for you anyway." "Now, but I still think he's cute. And a difference in age is no big deal. My mom was ten years older than my dad. They met when he was twelve, and they were happy until she died. Even until he died, he never stopped loving Cat paused for a moment, her." "If I were you, I'd try to find someone more your age. At least for a couple of years." Just then Duncan walked in. "Is everything all right?" "We were just talking about..." Anne said, about to give it a way. She looked over at Cat and she had that look like `Please don't tell'. "Girl things." "Well I think I'll go to sleep now," Cat said yawning and stretching. "I'll see you in the morning." She said as she walked into the bedroom. Duncan and Anne allowed Caitlynn to sleep on the bed, and with Anne having back problems due to the pregnancy, the sofa made her back feel better. "What was all that about?" Duncan asked. "We were talking about things. She has a crush on someone we know." "Don't tell me- Richie?" "Richie." Anne answered laughing. "He called while you were out, and it was the first time I saw her smile. Actually, I think it's the first time she's ever smiled." Anne answered. "But you didn't hear this from me. She's growing up, and it might hurt her. "Does she know?" "Yes, I told her about Richie." "What did she have to say about that?" "She liked the idea of being in love with an Immortal." "Don't all women?" he said smiling putting his arms around her. "Very funny Highlander, very funny." Chapter 7 A few days later, Anne had a doctor's appointment and Duncan was out having lunch with his friend Maurice. It was rainy out, and Cat didn't feel like going to the river. Usually if it rained, it was her favorite thing to do, but today she just didn't feel like it. So she decided to sit on the couch and watch TV. After a while, she fell asleep and was having a dream about her and Richie when she woke up feeling the buzz. She sat up and listened for any noises. She knew it wasn t Duncan s, but it was familiar. Because she was still out of it, she asked "Richie?" But there was no answer. She got up and took her saber from the wall and looked out the window. She saw a shadow moving across the dock. She opened the door and there in front of her stood Jayden. "So we meet again." he said. "This time I came prepared." Cat said in response. "Shall we fight?" "Well what else did you come for? Dinner? "I came for your head, and I'm not leaving until I get it." he said as he drew his sword from under his coat. "Well, I guess you won't be leaving anytime soon." They raised their swords and started fighting. Jayden didn't realize how good Cat was. She gave him a good fight. The swords hit with a loud clanking sound, and they hit with such power, that sparks flew with each shot. After about ten minutes, Cat thought she had him, and let her guard down. This was a near fatal mistake. Jayden took the hilt of his sword and hit Cats' leg causing her to fall. He raised his sword, and spoke the words Cat was had been waiting for, "Potest esse nur unus! There Can Be Only One!" and he prepared to take what he'd come for. Duncan walked down the plank and saw what was going on. "Caitlynn!" Duncan screamed. Duncans' yelling caused Jayden to be distracted long enough for Cat's adrenaline to kick in and allow her to recover and get on her feet. Jayden turned around just in time to see Cat raise her saber, say "Carpe Diem. Seize the Day!", and take his head with one final blow. Cat saw Jayden's head fall on the ground next to his lifeless body, and saw the power starting to escape his body. Duncan froze not sure of what to do. He saw the power hit Cat, and he wasn't sure how she would handle it. The first one was always a bad one. She stood there frozen as thousands of bolts of electricity ran through her body paralyzing her. She wanted to scream in pain, but when she opened her mouth, nothing came out but a muffled sound. The power was so strong, that windows on Duncan's barge and houseboats around, were blown out. The lampposts blew their bulbs, and the water was filled with explosions like a bomb had been planted under the water. Finally, Cat fell to the ground in exhaustion. Duncan ran over to her lying on the dock still. Duncan thought at first she might have been killed, but she was still breathing. Breathing shallow, but very rapid. When she came to, Duncan helped her up and just held her. She was scared and crying hysterically. Anne walked onto the dock at that time, and ran over to them. Before she even saw Jaydens' headless body, she knew what had happened. Both Duncan and Anne helped her into the boat, and laid her on the couch. She lied there shivering and crying. Anne ran into the bedroom and grabbed a blanket and covered Cat. Cat just laid there shivering. No one said anything, but tried comforting her with their gestures. Anne looked at Duncan with a look like "Why does this have to happen to someone so young?" Duncan just sat on the table next to the couch holding Cat's hand. After about an hour, Cat had calmed down enough to talk. She had had her eyes closed since she was brought in, even though she was awake, and suddenly she opened her eyes, looked at Duncan and said, "I can't do this!", and fell asleep.
