In those four days he'd scrupulously avoided both women, knowing that their physical presence would cloud his judgement. But it was time to end this. At seven pm on Tuesday night, Tessa heard a knock at the door. When she opened the door and saw Eleni on the other side, she was furious. "What are YOU doing here?" "Duncan called me and asked me to come. I assumed he'd be here al- ready." Without further ceremony, she brushed past Tessa into the foyer and left her coat and hat on the entry-way table as an indication she didn't plan to stay long. As she entered the livingroom, Richie's jaw dropped in surprise. "Hello, Richard." "Hey, Eleni! How are you?" "Well. And yourself?" "I'm cool. How's natalie?" "Very well, thank you. I'll tell her you asked." Tessa gave Riche dirty looks, but he just shrugged. After all, he had nothing to reproach Eleni with. It wasn't like any of this was her fault. The three of them spent a few quiet minutes appraising each other and wondering what Ducnan was up to. Finally at around ten after, they heard a key in the door. Duncan came in silently and hung up his coat. Then he en- tered the livingroom cautiously, grateful that the ladies seemed to be be- having themselves. "Sorry I'm late." All three nodded to accept his apology, but Tessa and Richie were confused - they haven't even been expecting him. "Richie, would you please excuse us for a few moments?" Without a second's hesitation, Richie retreated to the kitchen. As curious as he was, he was grateful to be excused. Duncan addressed the ladies like a lawyer before a jury. "Ladies, you have both been very kind in waiting for an answer from me. I've done nothing for the past four days but think about that answer. No matter who I choose, I hurt someone, so I have to do what I think is best for all concerned." Both women nodded, but didn't dare interupt. With a solemn air, he sat down next to Eleni. In her native tounge, he asked her, "Do you still want me?" Her whole face lit up - her espresso-colored eyes began to tear, and her crooked litle mouth slid left in a childish grin of sheer joy. Too breathless to speak, she nodded violently. He continued in English,"Then I'm yours." She threw her arms around him as though he was the last blanket in Alaska. Tessa simply got up and left, slamming the front door as she exited. Duncan felt awful for her, but there was nothing more he could do to make it easier for her. Meanwhile, Eleni showered him with kisses which he returned in kind. Richie peeked out of the kitchen to see what was going on. "Hey, you two -- what should I put on my change of address cards?" Duncan and Eleni looked at each other blankly. They hadn't thought that far ahead. Duncan motioned for Richie to join them so they could dis- cuss it. Duncan pulled Eleni into his lap, and Richie sat on the other end of the couch. Looking down into Eleni's face, still glowing from his kisses, Duncan tried to be serious."Well, do we really want to go to Greece when Natalie and Richie would both have to learn the language?" Playing with his hair, Eleni purred,"Well we can't stay in Seatle. How about a nice quiet college town...somewhere in the midwest maybe. Richie could take classes and you and I could train Natalie without looking over our shoulders every three seconds." They looked to Richie. He seemd to be mulling it over. "College town, eh? Okay, just make sure alot of girls go there." End part 9 =========================================================================
