I debated on whether it would be more appropriate to post it to the Highlander discussion list, HIGHLA-L, or the Highlander fiction list, HLFIC-L. Since it is a work of fiction and since some of the people I e-mailed suggested it would be nice to share it with the HLFIC-L members, I am posting it to HLFIC-L. If you would prefer to read a story or you are not interested in numerology, read no further. Still with me? Note: This was put together around the end of 1994. (Thought it was a shame to leave it lying around in a drawer gathering dust.) As of the time this was written, accurate birthdates were not available. Birthdates used are not from the official timeline. They are, instead, from the only timeline I could find at that time that offered suggested birthdates. This means that zodiac and path number information may or may not be accurate. Hope you enjoy this or at least get some new ideas for some of your own characters and stories. Numerology and Astrology for Highlander by Laura Michaels For those of you who are curious as to what the stars and numbers say about some of HIGHLANDER's main characters.... First, some basic information on numerology may be useful. The personality number describes the personality or outer self. The heart number describes what one desires to be or one's image. The soul number describes one's inner self and one's motivations. These are found by adding the values of certain letters in the name and continuously adding them until a number one through nine, eleven or twenty-two is arrived at. The life path or destiny number describes the general direction of one's life. Duncan MacLeod: --------------- Birthdate = November 1, 1592 (from information from the episode "The Gathering" and "Duncan MacLeod - Life and Times" timeline from America Online at E-Mail address bjroth@aol.com) Zodiac sign = Scorpio Personality number = 11 (dreamer) Heart number = 4 (hard-working) Soul number = 7 (introspective) Path number = 11 Duncan is a Scorpio. This is a very accurate sign for Duncan. Just pick up a good description of a Scorpio from an astrology book to see what I mean. Scorpio is also a fitting sign for an Immortal because along with the scorpion, this sign is sometimes symbolized by an eagle or a phoenix. The phoenix rising from the ashes is a very apt symbolic description of an Immortal. As an interesting side note, the NEW COMPLEAT ASTROLOGER says a typical fictional Scorpio personality would be James Bond. In "Revenge of the Sword," Duncan makes a joke about being James Bond. Scorpios make good survivors. Scorpio is a fixed or stable sign. It is also a water sign. Duncan's personality number is an eleven. Elevens are idealistic, inspiring, intuitive, inventive, perceptive, refined and spiritual. They often have very good leadership capabilities. Elevens and twenty-twos are higher numbers and have special significance in numerology. The higher the numbers get, the more complex or highly developed a personality can become. This is because higher numbers are made up of a variety of lower numbers and can have similar vibrations to any or all of these lower numbers as well as going beyond them. If a person does not live up to a higher number's potential, that person's actions can end up more closely resembling the actions of someone with a lower number. In the case of an eleven, the lower number would most often be a two. Which means, an eleven can end up showing a lot of the traits of a two personality, if he doesn't live up to his higher potential. It's interesting to note, Tessa's personality number is a two. This could give Duncan and Tessa a lot of similar traits at times. Duncan's heart number is four. Fours are hard-working. They are conscientious, conservative, dependable, economical, exacting, loyal, organized, practical, patient, thorough and trustworthy. His soul number is seven. Sevens are analytical, introspective, intelligent and intuitive. They can be conservative, quiet, refined, reserved, sensitive, shy, studious, wise, withdrawn and well-mannered. They persevere. They are kind and don't like to see others get hurt. Duncan's destiny or path number is also an eleven, which relates to spiritual involvement, revelation and understanding life. Cancer is a cardinal or dynamic sign. It is also a water sign. Twos are conservative, diplomatic, friendly, patient, quiet, shy, sensitive, studious, sweet, tactful. Twos enjoy collecting things. Many twos are antiques enthusiasts. In numerology, compatibility between individuals can be figured out by comparing personality numbers. Odd and even personality numbers are opposites and can clash. Both odd or both even personalities should have a lot in common and get along well. The personality numbers compared are brought down to a range between one and nine. That would make Duncan a two. (11 -> 1 + 1 = 2) It means Tessa and Duncan are both twos, which indicates they should have a lot in common as far as a relationship is concerned. Three's are artistic, charming, friendly, imaginative, optimistic, sociable and talented. They enjoy music and art. This is Tessa's heart number so we see a lot of her artistic side. Tessa also has a soul number of eight, which isn't so obvious, but also shows up. Eights can be authoritative, courageous, dependable, diplomatic, exacting, intelligent, organized, polite, practical, self-reliant, sociable, tactful, trustworthy, and zealous. Eights are business and material oriented, and have good judgement and management abilities for running a business. This leads me to wonder just how Duncan and Tessa split up the duties of running the antique store. While Duncan has a heart number of four and can be very hard-working and economical, Tessa with a soul number of eight should really excel at business matters. We see Tessa being asked to go to Paris to run an exhibit in "Band of Brothers." Tessa's destiny number or path is one which stands for self-reliance. Ones also have to do with self-development, leadership and realizing the potential for originating and creating. Richie Ryan: ------------ Birthdate = August 3, 1974 (from information from the episode "The Gathering" and "Duncan MacLeod - Life and Times" timeline from America Online at E-Mail address bjroth@aol.com) Zodiac sign = Leo Personality number = 11 (dreamer) Heart number = 7 (introspective) Soul number = 4 (hard-working) Path number = 5 Richie is a Leo. Leo is a fixed sign like Duncan's. However, it is also a fire sign. They make excellent leaders. As stated before, elevens are also good leaders. It'll be interesting to see what Richie is like when he's more experienced and can step out of Duncan's shadow more often. He may be more outgoing than Duncan. Based on his numbers and astrological sign, there's a lot of ground to explore in Richie's personality. The show hasn't even scraped the surface yet. It's also an interesting coincidence that Amanda compared Richie to King Richard the Lion-hearted in "The Lady and the Tiger" since Leo is symbolized by the lion. For calculating the personality, heart and soul numbers, the name Richie was used instead of Richard. The name most commonly used is the name most commonly calculated. If the numbers were calculated for Richard instead, it would give us a look at another side to Richie's personality that is probably far less seen. Richie's numbers come out very similar to Duncan's. This is interesting because Duncan most likely sees a lot of his younger self in Richie. It also means both should have a lot in common. Possibly this is one reason for their arguments; they think too much alike. Richie's soul number is four. It may be difficult to think of Richie as hard-working from what we've seen so far. This being Richie's soul number, instead of his heart number like Duncan's, it is more of an inner attribute and more difficult to recognize. However, there have been some hints in the shows. Duncan trusted Richie to do research for him in "The Gathering"/"Revenge is Sweet" (video tape version). Also, in the third season, Richie's seen taking on more responsibilities at the dojo, so there should be a chance to see more of this side of him. Five is a good life path number for an Immortal and an accurate destiny for Richie so far. Fives are supposed to be free, adapt to change and make use of opportunities. The number five also represents adventure, something Immortal's are often involved in. It is also associated with travel. Richie's been doing a lot of traveling since he's met Duncan. He's been to Paris and back twice in the first two seasons alone and several other places on the way according to the episode "Prodigal Son." Numerology and astrology make good writing tools for analyzing or creating characters. They're especially useful when fleshing out traits and attributes for supporting characters or those not often seen in a story. For more information on numerology: Books - ALL IN YOUR NUMBERS by Kathleen Roquemore gives a very good description of the meaning of numbers. Programs - There are many shareware programs available for numerology. I know of one nice IBM compatible public domain numerology program, NUMERO, available on the InterNet Connection CD-ROM. (Check your local BBS for it too.) This program does in depth numerology calculations, but you need other references to figure out what the numbers mean. There's also a commercial program available for IBM compatibles that calculates major numerology numbers and gives short descriptions of attributes of these numbers available on the PSI disk sold by INTERCOMP, Section PSI-IN, Box 6514, Delray Beach, FL 33482. This program was used in putting together the information in this document.
