Tippitt, 1994 MAJORLY non-canon (or is it?) Part 2 ******* The mountain man kicked at Lassie, who jumped out of the way and bit a hunk out of one of his boots. Undeterred, he reached for Timmy. The boy had the wisdom to turn tail and run, Lassie by his side. They crashed their way through the trees, limbs whacking them as they ran. The man stayed just a few feet behind them, taunting Timmy. "You know how it's going to end, boy! Or are you a new one?" (What does he want with me? A new *what*?) Lassie jumped over the mountain stream, then turned, looking for her master to follow. Timmy grabbed the rope he'd been swinging from just this morning and swung across. A quick yank, and the rope was down, a few moments' time bought. Lassie barked for Timmy to follow her up a hillside as the stranger sloshed through the stream. The boy and his dog dashed up to an open hillside. "Lassie, there's no cover here, girl!" Timmy moaned. Lassie just yipped. The stranger arrived a few moments later, wet from his head to his toes. "Ya been a lot of trouble to me, kid," he said. "I sure hope yer Quick'nin's worth th' effort." He once again drew his sword. Lassie's ears lay back against her head as she growled at the agres- sor. Timmy backed up against a tree. There was nowhere to run but down and that would mean contact with the bad man. "You must be making some kind of mistake." "No, yer play f'r sympathy's the mistake," the man snarled. He spit tobacco juice on the ground and stepped forward. "Whu--?" Timmy opened his eyes to see the man gone, a hole in the ground in his place. "What? Another well?" He stepped carefully toward the edge and peered down. There was no seeing the mountain man. Timmy patted Lassie on the head. "You know, girl, we sure do seem to run into a lot of those things. At least it wasn't *me* falling in this time." Lassie barked happily and licked Timmy's face. "We'd better get home before I *really* get in trouble." ******* Timmy tried to tell his mom and dad that he'd been pursued by a bad man who fell into a well. They wrote it off to a vivid imagination and then hugged him, told him not to worry them so much the next time they came on vacation here. Timmy told them in no uncertain terms that he'd rather vacation in some other place from now on. All was well once again, and the family loaded up their station wagon and headed home--Timmy had to start junior high next year, after all. Three days later, Caleb crawled his way out of the well. "I'll be beat with a horse's tail," he murmured to himself as he lay panting on the ground. "Never seen an Immortal dog before." ******* Richie awoke in a cold sweat. Static from the TV filled the air. He reached over to his remote and switched the TV off, leaving behind the local-access cable station. "Whoa." He shook his head, got up to go to the bathroom. "That's the *last* time I eat an anchovy pizza before bedtime." ******* *Definitely* The End =========================================================================
