Warning: slight language (PG to PG-13) ====== A Hard Day's Knight (Part 3/?) by April Ruskin ====== Julie and Dan were lounging in a booth at the Raven waiting for Nick to show up when a man walked up and asked Julie to dance. Julie decided to dance with him and left the booth. A few minutes later, Nick showed up and sat down. "Where's your sister?" Nick asked Dan. "She's dancing. She'll be back in a minute." Dan replied. "Well, are you going to tell me about why she killed Kelnoff?" Nick asked. "Yah. Have you ever heard of Immortals?" Dan asked. "What? Immortals? Well, there's vampires." Nick replied. "No, true Immortals. Humans who live forever. They can only die by beheading. Almost all of them play what they call the 'Game'. They kill each other till there's only one left in the world, and that one wins the 'Prize'. No one knows what this prize is, but a lot of them want it. My sister is an Immortal, but she doesn't play the Game. Kelnoff attacked her, and she defended herself." Dan explained. "And what about the lightening everyone saw?" Nick asked suspiciously. "That's the 'Quickening'. It's an Immortal's life-force. When an Immortal is beheaded, his or her Quickening becomes pat of the victor's Quickening." Dan explained. "How long did it take you two to come up with _that_ story?" Nick asked scornfully. "You don't believe me, do you?" Dan asked. "No, I don't." Nick told him. Just then, Julie walked back to the booth. Nick stood up and said "Julie Thatcher, I need you to come down to the precinct to answer some questions about the murder of Kenneth Kelnoff." Julie shrugged her shoulders and allowed Nick to take her by the arm and lead her out. Nick escorted Julie out of the Raven, and Dan followed behind. But before they could get into the Caddie, Julie went ramrod straight and whispered "There's another Immortal nearby." "Oh really? And how can you tell?" Nick asked sarcastically. "Immortals can sense each other." Julie told him. Just then, Duncan MacLeod came around the corner and looked around. When he noticed the intense look that Julie gave him, he knew he had found an Immortal, if not the Immortal he and Joe were looking for. Nick took no notice of Duncan or Julie's statements and put Julie in the back seat of the Caddie. Then he got in and waited for Dan to get in. As the Caddie drove off, Duncan memorized the license plate number. ===== "We know you killed Kelnoff Ms. Thatcher, so why don't you just tell us the motive." Tracy Vetter told Julie. They had been at it for hours, and Julie just answered their questions calmly and ignored their accusations. "Look, I've had enough... If you can prove that my sister did something wrong, then arrest her. If not, I think it's time for us to go home" Dan told the detective's angrily. Tracy and Nick look at each other and leave the room for a conference. "We know she did it, but we can't prove it Nick. The line-up showed that our witness didn't get a good enough look at the murderer to identify her as Julie Thatcher, and you didn't see her till a couple of blocks away, which means that she could have come out of anywhere. We have nothing to hold her on, so let her go. When we get more, we'll just pick her back up." Captain Reese told the detectives. "All right Captain, if you say so." Tracy sighed. Nick just stood there staring intently at the brother and sister on the other side of the glass, wondering if anything they told him was even possible. After Julie was released from the police station, she and Dan took a taxi home. "I'm gonna skip class today and laze around in bed." Julie declared. "That's what I do everyday. It's not a bad life." Dan replied with an evil grin. Julie hit her brother and grinned at him. "You always were a lazy son of a bitch, you know that?" "Hey, if I am, what does that make you?" Dan replied. Julie just gave him a funny look and said "Since you feel that way, you can pay for the taxi." Dan shrugged his shoulders and said "No skin of my back." ===== After Duncan had gotten the information from the license plate on Nick's caddie, he went to the police precinct to see if he could get anymore information about the female Immortal. "Hi, I'm looking for Nick Knight. I think I may have some information about the murder of Kenneth Kelnoff." Duncan told the desk sergeant. A young woman came up to him and said "I'm Knight's partner, Tracy Vetter. Detective Knight has gone home, maybe I can help you?" Duncan poured on his charm and replied, "I'm sure you can. My name is Duncan MacLeod, and I heard that a friend of mine was a suspect in the murder and I came down here to give her some help." "You're friends with Julie Thatcher?" Tracy asked excitedly. 'This could be the break in the case we need.' she thought to herself. "Julie Thatcher? I don't know any Julie Thatcher. I'm talking about June Monroe. Oh my, don't tell me I made a mistake. I'm so sorry." Duncan said to Tracy looking contrite and embarrassed. "That is the last time I listen to Paul when he tells me he has important news." "That's quite all right Mr. MacLeod. We've gotten used to this sort of thing. Don't trouble yourself over it." Tracy told him while thinking 'Damn, and this could of been the break we've been looking for.' Duncan walked out into the sunlight thinking to himself 'Won't Joe be happy. Not only do I know what she looks like, I also know what name she's using.' -- Cousin April -- the Ninja Babe with an attitude Born to make normal people's lives a living hell. aruskin@edge.ercnet.com "Faciemus ut Dewus Mountainus e Tuo Nasone Exeat!"
